Wall Climbing Robot

Monday, May 7th, 2007
gecko prototypeA wall climbing robot is being developed at Carnegie Mellon University. By studying what enables a gecko to stick to surfaces, scientists at the Nano Robotics Laboratory are able to mimic this and apply it to robotics. This system allows the robot to climb walls. The secret lies in thousands of tiny hairs on a gecko’s feet. These hairs enable the gecko to stick to surfaces without the use of any adhesive. Seen here is an older prototype of the robot.
