Cool Robots up Close
Sunday, May 20th, 2007 The Jet Propulsion Laboratory “The assembly, inspection, and maintenance requirements of permanent installations in space demand robots that provide a high level of operational flexibility relative to mass and volume. Such demands point to robots that are dexterous, have significant processing and sensing capabilities, and can be easily reconfigured — both physically and algorithmically. The LEMURs (Limbed Excursion Mechanical Utility Robots) are designed to address these challenges.” Check out more of their robotics projects here. |

Wow, what a week for robotics. First we had the
Black-i Robotics was founded by Brian Hart after losing his son in Iraq. The LandShark from Black-i Robotics is a robotic platform with many add ons. This robot is designed to defuse bombs and haul away wounded soldiers. See the robot do a doughnut in this
The VIPeR (Versatile, Intelligent, Portable Robot) pictured here is being developed by the Israel in conjunction with Elbit Systems. It is designed to sniff out bombs and disable them with jets of water or even fire a mini Uzi. The VIPeR can also be outifitted with a grenade launcher. The robot is controlled with a harness and a helmet mounted display. The VIPeR weighs 25 lbs and measures 18″L x 18″W x 9″H (46 x 46 x 23 cm). This small bot can maneuver in tight spaces and even climb stairs. The tiny Terminator has arrived.
