Cool Robots up Close

Sunday, May 20th, 2007
LEMUR robotThe Jet Propulsion Laboratory is having had their open house this last weekend. The event is open to the public and free. The JPL is located in Pasadena, CA. If you are in the area today, check it out. Directions and more info here.Seen here is one of the JPL’s robotics projects called LEMUR IIa. This cool, flexible robot looks more like a giant crab than a lemur to us. A snip for from the project description:

“The assembly, inspection, and maintenance requirements of permanent installations in space demand robots that provide a high level of operational flexibility relative to mass and volume. Such demands point to robots that are dexterous, have significant processing and sensing capabilities, and can be easily reconfigured — both physically and algorithmically. The LEMURs (Limbed Excursion Mechanical Utility Robots) are designed to address these challenges.”

Weekly Robot Roundup

Friday, May 18th, 2007
robot group photoWow, what a week for robotics. First we had the VIPeR by Elbit Systems. Then we saw the LandShark unveiled, complete with a video. Then 4 new inductees into the Robot Hall of Fame were announced at the Robo Business Conference. The inductees are the Raibert Hopper, Data from Star Trek, NavLab 5 and Lego Mindstorms. See more photos of new robots from the Robo Business Conference at CNET here.

And now iRobot has announced the iRobot Create Challenge. From now until August 31, 2007, you can enter the contest to win $5,000. iRobot has partnered with Tom’s Hardware and Instructibles to bring you this contest. See all the rules here. Basically, make the coolest new robot using iRobot’s Create as a platform, then upload your story and photos to Instructibles and hopefully win. Better get creating folks!

Robot Hall of Fame - New Inductees

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Carnegie Mellon University announced today at the Robo Business Conference its new inductees into the Robot Hall of Fame. The inductees are the Raibert Hopper, Data from Star Trek, NavLab 5 and Lego Mindstorms. The Raibert Hopper was created by Marc Raibert in the 1980’s and was a study in balance as the robot had to continually keep moving or it would fall over. Lieutenant Commander Data is a character from Star Trek the Next Generation played by actor Brent Spiner. NavLab 5 was a van modified to drive autonomously developed at Carnegie Mellon. Similar vehicles now compete in the DARPA Challenge. And last, but not least, we have Lego Mindstorms. These are robots that are quickly built by using legos to add on components. A central programmable lego brick acts as the brain. Congratulations to all the inductees.

LandsharkBlack-i Robotics was founded by Brian Hart after losing his son in Iraq. The LandShark from Black-i Robotics is a robotic platform with many add ons. This robot is designed to defuse bombs and haul away wounded soldiers. See the robot do a doughnut in this video. This company, as well as i-Robot, Carnegie Mellon University and many others will be present at the Robo Business Conference in Boston, May 15-16. Carnegie Mellon will also announce the new inductees into the Robot Hall of Fame.

Viper DroneThe VIPeR (Versatile, Intelligent, Portable Robot) pictured here is being developed by the Israel in conjunction with Elbit Systems. It is designed to sniff out bombs and disable them with jets of water or even fire a mini Uzi. The VIPeR can also be outifitted with a grenade launcher. The robot is controlled with a harness and a helmet mounted display. The VIPeR weighs 25 lbs and measures 18″L x 18″W x 9″H (46 x 46 x 23 cm). This small bot can maneuver in tight spaces and even climb stairs. The tiny Terminator has arrived.
