Powerline Crawler

 A new robot to monitor power lines has been designed by Alexander Mamishev and a team from the University of Washington. The snake like robot crawls along buried power lines, while its sensors detect anything wrong. This is easier and less time consuming than sending people out into the field to monitor miles of cables that are hard to get to. These long power cables are usually left in place until they fail or replaced after a set period of time. The robot has been tested in the field and Mamishev is in talks with several companies to commercialize the robot.
