Diet Guru RobotIn the science fiction version of the future robots can do all sorts of things like fly and shoot lasers. Who ever thought robots would be turned into diet and exercise gurus? Well 2 different projects have the same goal: To help you lose weight.

Folks at MIT have created a sociable robot with an external keypad so you can enter data on how much you ate, what exercise you didn’t do, etc… This robot without a mouth encourages you as you enter your data. Several of these weight loss gurus are being created for placement into homes in Boston. The people running this project will then study how the robot worked in these homes.

SportoOver at TeRK, Eric Schweikardt and his team have created Sporto. By wearing the SenseWear Pro continuous body monitoring device made by BodyMedia Sporto records how much exercise you get and responds appropriately.

Sporto is shaped a little like a bowling pin and can expand or contract depending on your amount of exercise. It also changes color based on your exercise.

This robot doesn’t talk to you like the one from MIT, but is just a little less creepy and a little more cool.
