A robot glider that propels itself through water and uses heat from the ocean to power itself has been hard at work around the Virgin Islands. The robot carries sensors to measure salinity, temperature and biological productivity.
Most robots of this type rely on batteries, but this one uses the difference in temperature between hot and cold spots in the water to create an almost unlimited power supply. This robot could keep going for another six months says a team from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
