Swarm Robotics

MIT roboticist James McLurkin has been busy studying swarm robotics. Or in other words, how to create a hive mind like the Borg.
Using Mother Nature as a model, his core research is developing algorithms and techniques for constructing and programming large swarms of autonomous robots. Inspired by the behavior of ants and bees, his SwarmBots perform individual tasks that collectively contribute to the goals of the group
Sounds like the Borg to us. James will be making the keynote address at the Sensors Expo and Conference on 6/10 in Rosemount Illinois and the quote above is from the conference website. See some of his MIT projects here. Also see our recent post on a 7.5 million grant to the University of Pennsylvania to develop swarm robotics here.
In the meantime, we will get busy working on our answer to the Borg.
