Basil, the Robot of Our Dreams
By Chief Robot. Filed in DIY, Robot News |
Basil is a homemade robot by Jim and Louise Gunderson. Recently they gave a live demonstration of Basil at the Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver. Basil has no pre-programmed set of instructions. What makes Basil so interesting is his ability to reason.
The Gundersons are actually able to give him voice commands such as “Go get me a beer.”. Basil can reason where the bar is and go order the drink. After the bartender put’s the beer on his flat top, Basil returns to whoever ordered the beer.
The makers of Basil have also recently published a book called Robots, Reasoning and Reification and hope to make Basil kits for the DIY crowd available next year.
Poor Basil, just like Basil from Faulty Towers always at the beck and call of his wife.

Flommytherobot says that it is good that “Basil”, as he is called by the humans, can properly understand the instructions given by the humans, for if some unscrupulous human programmed him to comprehend a woman saying “go get me a beer” as “go get me bare”, many resounding slaps might result to Basil.
Likewise with “Google my beard”.
Don’t embarass us, Basil.
