Soviet Era Robot Illustrations

The A Journey Round My Skull blog has posted up some really neat Soviet era illustrations. The illustrations are by E. Benyaminson for the book  Hello, I’m Robot! by Stanislav Zigunenko.

The images are being released under a Creative Commons license and feature a robotic hand playing chess in one and a robotic maid in another.

Robotic Sculpture From the 1960′s

senster10-lrgThe Senster is a robotic sculpture from the late 1960′s commissioned buy Phillips and made by Edward Ihnatowicz.  It resided from 1970 – 1974 at Evoluon.

The 15 foot long sculpture consisted of welded steel tubing, microphones and a computer.  It also employed doppler radar.

The sculpture reacted to visitor behavior and sound.

Funktionide Robot

dznthesisfunktionide20Most robots resemble something humanoid like Data from Star Trek or the programmable humanoid robots that play soccer.  Some robots like the Roomba actually perform useful functions.

Well, along comes Funktionide by Stefan Ulrich to shatter all pre-conceived notions as to what a robot is and looks like.  Stefan calls Funktionide an “emotional robot”.

Yup, that’s right, the white blob on the couch next to the guy is a robot.

Robot 13: Colossus! Issue 2

R13_Cover_2_sampThe comic book Robot 13 has a new issue out called Colussus!

This issue  continues with Greek mythology theme and has our hero Robot 13 fighting against a giant Phoenix.  Robot 13 is not quite sure who he is, but continues to ward off evil mythological creatures and save mankind.

The issue is available for pre order and will ship on October 16 for a measly $6.00, including shipping.
