Robotic Alarm Clock & Vacuum

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Designer Jeongmi Lee from Seoul has created a robotic vacuum cleaner that doubles as an alarm clock.

The alarm clock sits on the floor and is attached to your blanket by a string.  When the alarm goes off, the robot moves and pulls the blanket off of you.

The robot also poops, which is it’s way of removing the cleaning filter.  Some really neat ideas here, but I wonder how good the vacuuming is.

Robotic Spider

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Spider RobotGerman firm Fraunhofer has created a robotic spider for hazardous missions using 3D printing.

Spiders are very agile, and some can even jump. They owe this capability to their hydraulically operated limbs. Researchers have now designed a mobile robot modeled on the same principle that moves spider legs. Created using a 3-D printing process, this lightweight can explore terrain that is beyond human reach.

Using an elastic drive bellows, the eight legs are pneumatically controlled.  The robot is light , quick to produce and not costly thanks to a 3D printing method. The spider robot is so cheap that Fraunhofer envisions throwing it away after being only used once.  Anyone want a cheap 3D printable robotic spider army?

The robot will be shown at the upcoming Euromold trade show in Frankfurt Germany from November 29 – December 12.

FRIDA Concept Robot From ABB

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

FRIDAFRIDA is just a concept right now from global company ABB, but could be very useful.

The robot is aimed at industrial assembly while having soft edges so it can work with human coworkers.

FRIDA is controlled by  the IRC5 robot controller and also with a touchscreen.  It is easy to install and can be mounted on a wall or workbench. In some of the other photos the back of FRIDA looks like a large sewing machine.

Several prototypes of FRIDA have basically left the building and further research is being conducted by the FP7 project ROSETTA.

This robot sounds exactly like what Heartland Robotics has been working on.

No word on price or availability yet, but with the project this far along, we expect something soon.  Click through for a video of FRIDA in action.

Robotic Vacuum

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Instict

The latest in robotic vacuum design from Yanko Design and the 2010 Electolux Design Lab competition. The Instinct by Berty Bhuruth.  It almost looks like something from Star Wars or a robotic dog.

Berty Bhuruth’s robotic vacuum cleaner concept is a response to a future where people will have less time and less space to store things, making efficient cleaning a problem. The Instinct Vacuum cleaner, a robotic, four-legged device that adapts to its environment, allows it to clean in even the messiest of places. The Instinct chooses the path of less cleaning resistance by consulting 3d models of the room it creates before tackling its task.
