Researchers at Carnegie Mellon have developed a robotic pill.
The researchers have found a way to make the robot attach to your intestine without damaging it. You would swallow it like a pill and the doctor would tell it when to open its legs (thus attaching itself to your insides) via remote control.
The researchers use muscle wire to actuate the legs and were inspired by beetles for their adhesion technique which includes PDMS arrays.
The robot could be used to hold a tiny camera or for a biopsy.
This reminds us of the cartoon called Fantastic Voyage about the Combined Miniature Defense Force. This shrunken force was often inserted into people to solve medical mysteries!
Now if the doctors could only get patients to swallow this thing.
