Snake Robots To The Rescue

Aiko

A snake robot named Aiko has been developed to eventually help rescue victims. The snake moves by pushing off of objects and can navigate rubble in collapsed buildings where wheeled robots would fail.

The 1.5m long robot was developed by SINTEF and the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU.

In other snake robot news, the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon has also developed a snake robot. Using a modified hobby servo called a Super Servo. Check out this video where the snake actually crawls up the guys leg!

In another video shown here, the snake can actually swim.

The real question dear reader, is would you rather be rescued by a snake or a rat?
