recyclerYou have got to love a company that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Every time you visit a new page on the website of  Finnish company ZenRobotics, you get a new  tagline.  Our favorite one is:

We are afraid of Schwarzenneger.

ZenRobotics has developed a garbage sorting robot called the Recycler.  Using an array of sensors, the robot sorts the material into different recyclable piles.

ZenRobotics Recycler uses multiple sensor inputs to identify items and raw materials. Possible sensors include Visible spectrum cameras, NIR, 3D laser scanners, haptic sensors, transillumination etc. Thanks to the sensors, a diverse and accurate analysis of waste is possible for the first time.

In a test, the robot correctly identified 50 % of the construction waste it was fed.  This may not seem like a lot but,  construction waste accounts for 50% of all landfill material in the US, so saving even only half of that could be a very large amount.

Check out a trailer for ZenRobotics after the break.
