Origami Inspired Robot Wears Different Outfits

PrimerResearchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have created a  robot called Primer.

The robot is a small cube that transforms by moving onto flat sheets of material.  The material is then heated to bend into specific shapes around Primer, giving it an exoskeleton.

So far, Primer can turn into a boat, a rolling robot, walking bot and even a glider.

“Our approach shows that origami-inspired manufacturing allows us to have robotic components that are versatile, accessible, and reusable,” says Daniela Rus, CSAIL director and principal investigator on the project.
